Happy National Radio Day!

How great is radio? I can’t imagine my ride to work without turning up the car radio and listening to my favorite morning drive shows. I also can’t imagine my frequent long drives to NH without listing to music, content, and yes, even commercials on my favorite stations along the way. In fact, every time I get into my car, the first thing I do is turn the radio on. When I get to work, I log onto my fave radio websites to listen live. Listening to Mr. Morning on Kicks105.5 helps me ease into the workday and puts a smile on my face. I actually laugh out loud at the things that he come up with. They are too funny!

It’s amazing that this technology of signaling using radio waves has been around since the early 1900s and is still so popular today. The world hasn’t been the same since radio technology came about. It became an important way to communicate breaking news as well as to listen to our favorite musicians.

Every August 20th National Radio Day celebrates the great invention of radio. It is estimated that over 243 million American adults listen to the radio each month, and there are over $15,000 US radio stations, making it the leading reach platform over TV, PC, smartphone and tablet use. According to Nielsen.com, most of radio’s out-of-home listening happens in the car.

Sure, there are other ways to fill your day with music, but I think the differences are the DJs, hearing about local news and events, being able to request a song, or make a dedication or post. It’s like being with an old friend in many ways – it’s the connection we feel between the community and the on-air talent. It’s priceless.

In an article from CrowdCaster, the author notes, “Radio has changed the way we communicate with each other, how we share and promote our thoughts, opinions and creations…your radio is your companion: loyal and enlightening, ever prepared to share music with you…”

So today, listen to your favorite stations and amazing radio personalities that make the world a better place - and celebrate National Radio Day!
