This past Saturday, a 56-year-old Danbury homeless man was found dead in the Still River.

His name was David Mullen and police believed he lived on the banks of the Still River behind the old Danbury Newstimes building on Main Street. Mullins was only 56 years old.

Lynn Taborsack, who volunteers at the Dorothy Day Hospitality House, told the NewsTimes that she knew Mullins well and that he was a congenial friendly guy but appeared to be down on his luck. Police believe there was no foul play involved.

Danbury does a pretty good job with its homeless population. The Good Samaritan Mission has 14 beds for men and the Dorothy Day Hospitality House has 16 beds, and the City of Danbury also has a shelter available.

The success rate for helping Danbury's homeless increases substantially when they become involved in a program that helps them get off the streets. Regular visitors of the shelters are connected with resources through the state's Coordinated Access Network. David Mullen was not a regular visitor to the shelters which makes it more difficult for the city to reach out and help him connect with the resources available.
