Incoming Danbury Mayor Joe Cavo Gives First On-Air Interview

Late last week, we got the surprise announcement that long time Danbury Mayor, Mark Boughton, would be stepping down and taking a new position as Connecticut’s next tax commissioner.

Now according to the City charter, if the Mayor leaves his or her position for any reason, the city's Common Council President takes over until the next general election. That person who will take over is Joe Cavo, and I got a chance to talk to him for his very first on-air interview since the announcement.

I want to congratulate you on this new position, when will it be official that you are the next Mayor of Danbury?

"The Mayor is projecting to resign his post this Thursday night, and I'll be sworn in sometime shortly thereafter in a private ceremony due to COVID. There will be no fanfare to this swearing in, we're just going to keep the city business moving forward."

For people who know Joe, you know this already, but for people who don't know him yet, you're getting a great Mayor here, someone who really loves the city.

"Thank you so much for that, I appreciate that support always. It's just tremendous to have people believe in you, and continue to return you to office year after year, and tell you that they think you're doing a good job for them, and I want to continue that right into the Mayors office."

So how is the new First Lady, your lovely wife, Liz, feeling about all this?

"She's going off to work everyday, just like always, she's been a trooper thought this. As a nurse I want to salute the great job that she and all the health care workers have been doing during the pandemic. So at least for now things haven't changed, and they probably won't."

People don't realize how much he has been able to accomplish working with the city. He's done a tremendous job and I'm happy for him that he is able to start another chapter in his life, people should be extremely grateful to him shepherding this city over the last 20 years."
