It’s Time For a State Dog in Connecticut
Can you believe that the State of Connecticut doesn't have an official state dog? Well that could all change if one State Senator has any say in the matter.
Let's see, Connecticut already has a state flower, the Mountain-Laurel, a state bird, American Robin, a state nickname (actually two), the Nutmeg State and the Constitution State and heck, we even have a state shellfish, the Eastern Oyster. So why has it taken this long to even consider the fact that the state should have a state dog.
Now according to wtnh.com, State Senator Eric Berthel of Watertown wants the state to add a dog to the list of all things Connecticut. I'll give you three guesses as to what dog would be the front runner and the first two guesses don't count. Yup, you got it, the Husky.
I guess it's a good idea. When most people think of a dog associated with Connecticut, they think of the Husky - the UConn mascot.
Believe it or not, in the 240 plus years that the United States has existed there are already Thirteen pooch loving states in this country that have an official state dog, and they include:
- Alaska: Alaskan Malamute
- Georgia: Adoptable Dog (Shelter Awareness)
- Louisiana: Catahoula Leopard Dog
- Maryland: Chesapeake Bay Retriever
- Massachusetts: Boston Terrier
- New Hampshire: Chinook
- New York: Working Dogs (Includes all kinds of service, police, and therapy dogs)
- North Carolina: Plott Hound
- Pennsylvania: Great Dane
- South Carolina: Boykin Spaniel
- Texas: Blue Lacy
- Virginia: American Foxhound
- Wisconsin: American Water Spaniel
Plus there are five other states who have come close to naming an official state dog, but just haven't had the votes to get it passed yet. They include:
- Kansas: Carin Terrier
- Maine: Labrador Retriever
- Ohio: Labrador Retriever
- Oregon: New Foundland
- Washington: Siberian Husky
So the wait is on to see if Connecticut has enough dog loving legislators to finally give us an official state dog. Oh, by the way, did you know the state does have an official animal? It's the Sperm Whale.
