Officer Involved With Shooting in New Milford, State Police Investigate

UPDATE: According to an updated release from the Connecticut State Police, investigators have determined that Officer Hayes of the New Milford PD fired his weapon during this incident. The name of the deceased has been identified as 62-year-old, Kostatinos Sfaelos of New Milford. The shooting remains under investigation, and we will continue to update you as the details are released.

The Connecticut State Police have been called-in to investigate a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred in New Milford.

According to a press release, New Milford officers responded to a disturbance report at 47 Outlook Rd. at about 4:50 PM on Monday (August 28). Police say that when they arrived, a man armed with a shotgun exited the home and ran into the nearby woods.

At that point, the New Milford Police Department set up a perimeter and called in both a police negotiator and a K-9 team in an attempt to safely track down the man.

After a while, police say that the man exited the wooded area, approaching the officers with the shotgun still in hand. The man reportedly refused to drop his weapon despite demands from the police, at which point at least one New Milford officer shot the man.

The officers on the scene immediately began first aid before the man was transported to Danbury Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The names of both the deceased and the involved officer(s) are being withheld at this time.

State Police Detectives from the Western District Major Crime Unit will continue the investigation at the request of the State Attorney's office.
