The New York State Police are entering into a new era with more high-tech devices helping them to investigate crime scenes, handle traffic issues, deal with natural disasters, and more. This time around, they’re getting help from above — in the form of drones, that is. Luckily for us, the one thing they won’t be used for is speed enforcement, according to the New York Daily News.

Police say that nearly two dozen drones will be used by for disaster response, traffic safety, crime scene photography, and other things that will make State Troopers’ jobs safer. In total, they’re deploying 18 unmanned drones throughout the state, but this month, the new technology is being introduced with four to start. Ten more will be added by April.

The New York Daily News quotes State Police Superintendent George P. Beach II as saying:

The aerial drone systems we are deploying bring substantial benefits to our troopers in the field, and are representative of our ongoing efforts to provide the tools they need to deliver outstanding service to the public.

The New York State Trooper Foundation, a privately funded charity that raises money for state police training and equipment, donated these drones.
