A Waterbury man who police say was in possession of a number of guns that qualify as assault rifles and barricaded himself in his home surrendered peacefully.

According to the Connecticut State Police, members of the Statewide Narcotics Task Force North West Office and the Waterbury Police Department attempted to serve a narcotics related search warrant at the home of 34-year-old Matthew Carr.

Police say that when Carr spotted them, he ran to the back door of the residence, where a struggle ensued. A Taser was reportedly used in an attempt to subdue Carr, but he was reportedly able to break free before barricading himself inside the residence and allegedly grabbed what police describe as an assault rifle that was within reach of the door.

At that point, police say both the troopers and officers on site took tactical positions before getting on the phone with Carr in an attempt to calm him down while negotiating his surrender. At the same time, more officers from the Waterbury PD arrived, securing the perimeter, directing the local residents to shelter in place and let the schools know that there was something serious going on.

One hour later, Carr reportedly gave himself up peacefully and nobody got hurt.

As Carr was taken into custody, police say they founf seven rifles, six of which reportedly qualify as assault rifles, crack cocaine and a large quantity of ammunition.

After the incident, the Connecticut State made the following statement:

This was an extremely stressful situation which could have escalated dangerously. Thanks to the Waterbury Police Department, Troopers and Officers on the Statewide Narcotics Task Force for handling the incident so well and keeping our citizens safe.
