If you're planning on getting your flu shot in Putnam County this year, better wear short sleeves.

There will be two flu clinics in Putnam County during October, but no matter how chilly it might be, the Putnam County Department of Health has one request, and that's wear short sleeves.

Just like the COVID-19 testing clinics, the Putnam County flu clinic, where you can get your flu shot, will be drive-thru. According to patch.com, the reason for the request to wear short sleeves, and to pre-schedule is to ease the burden on administering the vaccine, and to make it easier and more efficient.

There will be two flu clinics during the month of October. The first will be Wednesday, October 7, at the Garrison Fire Department, 1616 Route 9, and the second clinic will take place on Friday, October 16 at the PCDOH at 1 Geneva Road, with a rain date of Monday, October 19. The clinics will be open from 1 pm until 6:30 pm both days.

Putnam County Health Commissioner, Michael J. Nesheiwat, MD, said that a flu vaccine can reduce the risk of illness anywhere from 40 percent to 60 percent. He also told patch.com how important the vaccine is, especially this year during a pandemic.

Serious complications or a lengthy course of illness are less likely if you get immunized with a flu shot. Preserving your health and your immunity has never been more important than it is now as we continue reopening plans with the ongoing pandemic.

Putnam County Executive, Mary Ellen Odell, said the vaccine gives you peace of mind.

Getting vaccinated against the flu means there is one less thing for you to worry about with your own health and the health of your family. This year, as we continue to deal with COVID cases, our health department is making it more convenient and safer with drive-through service. Getting vaccinated is a proactive step you can take to protect yourself, your family and our great community of Putnam.

The clinics are open to all Putnam County residents who are 18 years of age or older. Remember, you must register and you'll find the forms on the health departments website at putnamcountyny.com.

You can also call for an appointment or more information at 845-808-1390, extension 43262. A maximum of 300 appointments will be available, and car pooling is encouraged.
