It's a dangerous world out there. We have mosquito's spreading a deadly EEE Virus, now another case of a rare tick-borne virus has been reported in Ridgefield.

According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health the latest case of Powassan virus disease was just reported in Ridgefield. So far this year cases have already been reported in New Canaan, New Preston and Newtown.

The Powassan virus is spread through the bite of an infected black-legged deer tick. Most cases are reported from late spring through mid-fall.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health said the virus can cause severe disease, and there is no vaccine or medication to prevent the virus.

If you think you have been infected and are experiencing fever, headache, vomiting and weakness seek medical attention immediately.

The best way to prevent the virus is to avoid area's where ticks are prevalent, and when out in wooded area's treat clothing with products containing permethrin. Permethrin can be used to treat boots, clothing and camping gear and remain protective through several washings.

Avoid wooded and brush filled areas with high grass and leaf litter. Walk in the center of trails. Also showering within a few hours of coming indoors has been shown to reduce your risk of getting any tick-borne virus.

Once your back home check all your clothing for ticks, they may be carried into the house by clothing and pets.

It's a good idea to tumble dry cloths in your dryer on high heat for at least ten minutes, which should kill any ticks that have attached to you.

Also check your body for ticks after returning from the outdoors. The best placed to check are under the arms, in and around the ears, back of the knees, in and around your hair, between the legs, around your waist, and inside your belly button.
