Connecticut Students Improve in English, Lag in Math

Kids are making strides in our state, but we still lag in one subject. 

I don't think I'm in the minority when I say that I hate taking tests. Thankfully though, I didn't buckle under pressure during my school years, and remarkably, I wound up doing well. We also know that our tests scores can have an impact on the rest of our lives.

There's some good news out for Connecticut students. According to fox61.com, students are showing a significant improvement in their results on the Smarter Balanced test also known as the SBAC. The test is given statewide to students in grades three through eight.

Now for the good news and the bad news. The good news from the fox61 story is that in the English-language arts section, 55% of students are meeting or exceeding the state achievement standards, and that's up more than 3% from last year.

The bad news is that, sadly, we still are lagging in the math. The SBAC still shows that more than half of Connecticut students are not meeting the achievement standard in math.

Department of Education Commissioner Dianna Wentzell said this to fox61:

In Connecticut, we remain fiercely committed to the work of supporting all districts — and especially our highest need districts — in their efforts to improve student outcomes and close achievement gaps
