The Danbury Fire Department responded to a unique call this morning. Someone had discovered that a swan was stuck in the ice on Candlewood Lake.

According to the Fire Department's Facebook page, several units were dispatched to rescue a swan who was stuck in ice that was a quarter of an inch thick at Poet's Landing. When rescue units arrived they found the swan but the situation was a difficult rescue since the ice she was stuck in was so thin.

Rescuers had to devise a careful plan to free the beautiful bird. They had to break up the ice, so Firefighters thought that moving the dock up and down would probably be the best way to save her. This approach, known as the "cannonball method" worked and the swan became free. The poor animal had probably been stuck for a while. She began eating as soon as she was able to move through the ice.
