Mosquitoes trapped at Keney Park in Hartford have recently tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The insects were trapped at the beginning of the month but only recently was it discovered that they were carrying the virus. Hartford's mayor, Luke Bronin, stated that there are no reported infections of the West Nile, but it is very important to take the steps in order to prevent being bitten. West Nile Virus has also been spotted in East Haven, Stamford, Chester, and Voluntown, according to Eyewitness News 3.

  • Wear light colored clothes while outdoors: Dark colors like deep blue and red attract the pests. Also, it's good to make sure the material of your clothes is thick, to offer extra protection.
  • Stay inside at dusk and dawn: These are the times that mosquitoes are most active, you can still enjoy your sunrises and sunsets- but from behind your screen door.
  • Make yourself less appealing: This one is going to be tough for you beer lovers out there. Turns out that drinking a 12-ounce beer will make you look like quite the snack for the flying bloodsuckers. Another thing that makes you popular among the pests is if you have Type-O blood. While there are no ways to change that part of you, you can actually cover up that scent with Victoria's Secret Bombshell Fragrance.
  • Get rid of standing water: Puddles, pools, swamps, whatever you want to call them- they are a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This is actually one of the easiest ways to get rid of a pest problem.
  • Use Insect Repellent: this one is pretty obvious...

These simple and easy steps should help keep the biting down and the summer fun up. If you are concerned about West Nile Virus, the Center for Disease Control has lot of information to help put your mind at ease.
