Wow that was fast! The new Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, named for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s father, started carrying Rockland-bound automobiles in late August, and just this past weekend, opened to traffic heading to Westchester. All traffic has just moved off of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Late Friday, the iconic bridge was closed down to all vehicles. Now all are using the first span of the new bridge, and it's in use earlier than planned, according to the Patch.

The closing of the Tappan Zee Bridge has us saying goodbye to an era.

It first joined Rockland and Westchester, specifically Nyack and Tarrytown, back in December of 1955. The last ride to cross the bridge had to be super special. It was with a police escort, and according to the Daily Mail (yes the news was reported as far away as the UK) it was a 1929 Model A Ford Phaeton driven by owner, Seth Kestenbaum. Seth gets ceremonial bragging rights as the last driver to cross the bridge.
