The weather is starting to warm up, and we will start seeing more motorcycles on the road. There are things that both motorcycle and car drivers can do to keep everyone safe.

I don't personally ride a motorcycle, but my husband does. I know he is a safe driver, but it's the visibility that makes me nervous. Sometimes, people in cars can miss someone on a motorcycle, and then there are those people that, for whatever reason, just don't like people who ride motorcycles.

Twice in my life have I been on motorcycles, and both of those times there were cars behind us that were riding way too close. I can't stress enough the importance of giving space to motorcycles. If they have to stop short, for whatever reason, and you don't have enough space to stop and keep from hitting them, the outcome will not be good.

So, I found some lists that have good safety tips for both motorcycle drivers and for those driving other vehicles. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has a good list of things that car and truck drivers should be aware of regarding motorcycles. On the other side, Consumer Reports has a list of 10 tips for motorcycle riders.

For those in cars and other vehicles, just be aware of the motorcycles on the road. Your chances of being aware greatly increase the less you are distracted, so it's best not to be talking on the phone while driving, and definitely NO TEXTING AND DRIVING.

For those driving motorcycles, don't pass someone unless you know you have enough space. Passing cars without being able to really see if there are more cars ahead of them or passing when a curve or a hill is coming up is probably not the best idea.

We're all excited for the weather to warm up and for spring to be here. Let's keep the roads safe for everyone!
