It's summertime, and the living is easy, but what do you do when things start to heat up? Of course, you get your splash on.

Around here, we're lucky enough to be blessed with plenty of bodies of water, both natural and man-made, where we can take a dip to escape the oppression of that summer heat. And sure, there are plenty of public pools and recreational clubs that you can join, but there's just something I love about swimming where I can't see my toes. I'm a glutton for the mystery of it all. Just have to be weary of those leeches. Plus, the chlorine and other chemicals burn my eyes, and by the end of the summer, if I've swam in the pool too much, they turn my hair a subtle, but gross shade of green.

All of that taken into consideration, here are five places in the Greater Danbury area that I'd prefer to get my splash on this summer:

  • 1

    Danbury's Beaches on Candlewood Lake

The largest lake in Connecticut, Candlewood Lake borders 5 different towns. Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford, Brookfield and Sherman. If you live in Greater Danbury, you're not that far away from a portion of the lake where you can get your splash on.

    Lake Kenosia

It may surprise you to learn that Lake Kenosia is not a natural lake at all, but a dammed section of the Still River. By that, I mean a place where the water can't get to another place naturally, not like, "Those damned kids won't get off my lawn!"

The city also uses Lake Kenosia from time to time as a source of drinking water, but it's still a great place to get your splash on.

    Brookfield Town Park

If you haven’t been to Brookfield Town Park lately, you might be pleasantly surprised. The Park Beach on Candlewood Lake features swimming, basketball and sand volleyball courts, picnic areas with tables and grills, and a Lakeside Community Room. Another great place to get your splash on.

    Squantz Pond

Located in New Fairfield and established in 1926, the park offers swimming, fishing, and scuba diving as well as a launch for motor boating. The park also has canoe and kayak rentals, picnicking facilities, and a nature center. Another great place to get your splash on.

    Kent Falls

In addition to its scenery, the park offers opportunities for hiking, fishing, and picnicking. If you want to cool down just jump into the falls or climb the trail to the top of the falls and get your feet wet in the stream. The water is always cold, and it's great on a hot summer day especially when you want to get your splash on.
