They are gentle giants, and it's rare when this type of breed is offered, so don't miss your chance at these two Great Pyrenees.

Their names are Phoebe and Finlay, and they came to the animal welfare society from a farm in Georgia where they were no longer needed. They were working dogs, but now they face the toughest job of their lives, and that's finding a new forever home.

Phoebe and Finlay are about 5-7 years old and about 110 pounds each. They are looking for a retirement home where they will have all the comforts of a real home. They would prefer a home with just each other. Phoebe is the more outgoing of the pair but Finlay warms up to new people quickly, they both have a mild energy level, but love to explore the yard daily. Phoebe tested positive for heart worm and will need to have treatments. Finlay came in with an old eye injury that left him blind in his right eye, due to infection it had to be removed.

The Animal Welfare Society would like to place them together because they are parents too. When they arrived in New Milford Phoebe was expecting, and Finlay was the proud father. She had the pups, and they have all been placed, now it's time to find these two new homes.

They should go to a home with someone who is familiar with the breed, and a home with a fenced in yard. They get along well with cat's, but the AWS does recommend a home without other dogs, or small children. As big as they are, they both think they are lap dogs, and they are super gentle, and walk well on a leash. They are all up to date on their vaccines, and have recently been spayed and neutered.

So share their story, because we know there's someone that wants these two if you don't. Our goal is to get them placed as soon as possible.

Now, because of the COVID-19 restrictions, if you're interested in adopting one of the featured pets, any dog or cat at the shelter, you must first fill out an application on their website at aws-shelter.org. Once your application is approved, you can call them at 860-354-1350 and schedule your one-on-one limited contact meeting.

The shelter is always in need of items to help keep the animals safe and clean. Right now, they are looking for bleach, paper towels and dry cat food.

If you can contribute, you can drop off the items at the shelter at 8 Dodd Road in New Milford. Just let them know you're going to drop something off, and you can do it with no contact by just leaving it in front of their building. You can also check the Animal Welfare website for their Amazon wish list, and have the items delivered right to the shelter.
