Why wouldn't East Haven snow plow drivers go back to work?

According to wtnh.com., 12 plow drivers have been suspended without pay for not coming into work. Remember all the snow that came down fast and furious last Friday? East Haven, which is just east of New Haven got hit with around 5" of snow.

Mayor Joseph Maturo sent the snow plow drivers home after their shifts last Friday to save on overtime pay. As the snow fell hard and fast, some of the drivers were called back into work. Twelve of those drivers refused to drive back claiming the roads were simply too treacherous.

The union told Mayor Maturo that the drivers were not required to go back in if called because it was a choice whether they choose to work overtime. Some of the East Haven plow drivers took advantage of the offer to work overtime and others did not. The union stated it was not a requirement or a mandate.
