Have you seen the signs by the lakes and oceans "Don't Feed The Birds"? There are a lot of good reasons for those signs. But did you know that the most important reasons of all are because you could be harming the very animals that you think you are providing a meal for?

I have heard that it is not good to feed bread to ducks and birds, but I didn't really know why. The Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society website explains that makes ducks and other wildlife sick because it lacks nutrients and calories needed to sustain them through the winter.

When you throw bread into the water, it rots which causes pollution and toxic surface algae. All of that not only makes the water smell really bad but even worse, it spreads disease that kills wildlife.  What can you safely feed ducks and other wildlife?

  • Cut seedless grapes
  • Cooked rice
  • Birdseed
  • Peas
  • Corn
  • Oats
  • Chopped lettuce

Save the mouths that you are trying to feed. Please don't give them bread!
