The Women's Center is thrilled that Governor Malloy has allocated $1.3 million for the environmental cleanup of Danbury's old Mallory Hat Factory site.

An article in the NewsTimes reports that Danbury's City Council unanimously voted to sell the 5-acre site to the Women's Center of Greater Danbury for $1 so they can build a 20-bed housing facility for women and children in transition.

The former Mallory Hat Factory soil was left contaminated due to the mercury, arsenic, asbestos, and lead used to manufacture millions of hats in the early 1920s.

Currently, the Women's Center has begun a major fundraising campaign to raise $6,000,000 to build the 20-bed residential facility. The center is a safe sanctuary and service provider for those who suffer from domestic abuse and sexual violence and their services are always offered free of charge.
