What Do the Locks on Lovers Leap Bridge in New Milford Mean?
So, I might not always be up on all the latest trends -- there seem to be new ones every week, but for a while now, I've been wondering what's up with all the padlocks appearing on the Lovers Leap Bridge in New Milford. I did some research, and here's what I found. Check it out:
My wife and I love to take a hike at Lovers Leap. It's got one of the most spectacular views in the area. Now if you've ever been there then you know you have to cross the Lovers Leap Bridge before you get to the hiking trails.
The last few times we've been there I noticed pad locks starting to appear on the bridge. Now these are not locks put on by the Town of New Milford, or to keep people off the bridge. These are locks that people have put there themselves and locked them to the bridge. So what's up with these locks, and why are they there? (Video Above)
Here's where the internet comes in handy. My co-host, Suzy, told me that this is something done on bridges all over and they are called "Love Locks". In fact, it's been happening for almost a decade now, (where have I been). So I checked it out, and according to Wikipedia.org, these locks are "locks of love" or "love padlocks" that are put on and locked to a bridge, a fence, a gate or a monument to symbolize love. The couple inscribes their names or initials on the padlocks, the locks are then put on the bridge, locked, and the key is often thrown away to symbolize unbreakable love.
So is this true, it's been a big thing is some European countries for awhile,in fact there were so many "Love Locks" on a Paris Bridge that officials had to cut them off due to the weight of the locks and how it was effecting the structure of the bridge.
This seems to be just the start here in New Milford. So the next time you head to Lovers Leap, check out the bridge and all the locks and padlocks that seem to be multiplying weekly.
