A local police officer, with over 40 years serving the community, died suddenly Tuesday morning.

Peter H. Convery, 65, the undersheriff at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, died after suffering an apparent heart attack at his Mahopac home around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Paramedics, sheriff’s deputies and first responders attempted to resuscitate him and rushed him to the Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel. Doctors and nurses were unsuccessful in their attempts to revive him.

“We are all absolutely heartbroken,” Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith stated. “Peter was a loving and devoted family man, who adored his wife Luanne and their children Caitlin, Courtney, Kerry, Tara and Connor, and their children’s families.’

Convery spent over 40 years serving the Hudson Valley. He began his career with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office in 2002, after a long career with the Westchester County Department of Corrections, where he retired as a captain.

“Peter spent most of his adult life giving of himself in conscientious public service to the community and in volunteer activities for many worthy causes, Smith said.

Convery was also a long-time member of the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department and a parishioner of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Mahopac.

Our thoughts and prays are with his family and friends.
