With prom just over week away, dresses had been purchased and the excitement was starting to set in. Then, last Friday, students were told that certain prom dresses would not be allowed for prom.

According to NBC Connecticut, the administration at Shelton High School made the announcement that the prom policy printed in the student handbook says that dresses with cutouts, slits, and backless dresses are not allowed at prom.

The guidelines have been around for years, but the students said they were not aware of them. Here is how Supt. Freeman Burr defended the announcement:

"We want all students attending the prom on Saturday evening to have a memorable night," Burr said. "We know that all of our students want a great prom. We want all of our young female students to be dressed beautifully. Obviously, we want them to enjoy themselves. However, we also want them to be dressed appropriately – appropriately with class and dignity, and also dressed in a tasteful way."

Students have said it's more the timing of the announcement that they are upset about.

The announcement only gives those with dresses deemed inappropriate a week to find a new dress. Not to mention the extra cost of the second dress (if they can't return the first dress). One student said her mom is going to send the school a bill if they don't let her in with her dress.

Students have brought up the fact that the dresses that are inappropriate this year were perfectly acceptable last year and if there was a problem, the school should have addressed it months ago instead of waiting until a week before prom.

The students have started a petition, asking school leaders to relax the guidelines. Their argument is that limiting what the female students can wear is an unfair and a selective enforcement of the dress code.
