On July 12, your morning Joe will cost you a bit more.

I tuned into CNN today to see what was going on in the world, and saw that Starbucks planned to continue with what seems like their summer tradition. This is the fourth summer in a row that they have raised prices on some of their drinks. The Seattle-based coffee company has increased prices every summer since 2013.

It also seems that they couldn't wait for the extra revenue, because some patrons were charged the higher fees last week. Starbucks said that it was an accident, and they will refund the difference, but, really, who is going to go to Starbucks with a receipt that they probably threw away to ask for 10 cents back?

CNN also reported that for the first quarter of this year, Starbucks' global sales increased 6% with a revenue of nearly $5 billion. How does the company do it? How do they continue to raise prices and make money?

I heard an interesting thing a few years ago. When the US economy tanked, incredibly Starbucks kept making money. Why? Because even though the price for a cup of coffee is expensive, psychologically, people view it as the one luxury they can afford. We might not be able to afford a vacation, a new car, or even to pay our mortgage on time, but that five bucks for a cup of coffee, we can do that.

It's crazy how the human mind works. I think I need to talk to my cats more. They have the right idea. No coffee, no dress code, no work, but they live like royalty. What are we doing wrong?
