If you are a fan of Philly Beef Steaks, listen up. The United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service has released a statement regarding the Ready-to-Eat product by Classic Sysco. Tests samples from a batch produced on August 9, 2018 are "potentially positive for Listeria Monocytogenes." Consuming contaminated food can cause listeriosis.

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food.  -United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service

CTI Foods has recalled 6,720 pounds of the product packaged in 2.5 pound bags which are distributed in 10 pound cases. The package code on both the cases and the individual bags are labeled "FULLY COOKED PHILLY BEEF STEAK SLICED Caramel Color Added" and the package code of the affected product is 4887097. There have been no confirmed cases of anyone getting sick from consuming the steaks yet. If you are concerned that you may have been affected, contact you healthcare provider.
