Brandy Clark Performs Acoustic Version of New Song ‘Three Kids No Husband’ [WATCH]
In early June, Brandy Clark will release her sophomore album, Big Day in a Small Town, and in advance of the project's debut, the singer-songwriter has shared a stripped-down, acoustic version of one of its tracks, "Three Kids No Husband."
"Three Kids No Husband" tells the story of a struggling single mom and was written by Clark and Nashville songwriting powerhouse Lori McKenna. According to Clark, McKenna researched her work before the two sat down to write together and mined the song’s title from a YouTube video Clark created to introduce “Pray to Jesus,” a song from her 2013 album 12 Stories.
“I was talking about the woman who inspired that song, and I said that she had five kids and no husband,” Clark says in a video telling the story behind “Three Kids No Husband.” “There’s always a line that somebody else in the room says that really pulls me in. It’s usually a line that I wouldn’t say because it’s not in my vernacular, but it’s in theirs.”
The line that Clark is referencing is a “hairnet job at a diner on Main,” and it's indicative of the song’s vivid lyrical portrayal of the challenges of raising children without the support of another parent while scraping to make ends meet. Big Day in a Small Town is set for release on June 10. It will also include Clark’s latest single, “Girl Next Door.”
