Saturday was my daughter's birthday party, and we had it at EverWonder Children's Museum in Newtown. I knew it was going to be a great day, because as we were walking in, I found a Ben's Bell. I have wanted to find one of them ever since I first heard about them. Their message is simple and powerful at the same time. Be Kind.

Ben's Bells was started by a woman whose son passed away when he was just 3-years-old. Not knowing how she would live through the grief, people in the community helped get her through it, and she felt how powerful simple acts of kindness can be.

The bells are made by volunteers. People can go to the studios to paint the clay, and help put them together. Then, once they are dry, the bells are distributed in the community. They are not for sale, they are meant to bring a smile to your day when you find them unexpectedly.

I can tell you, it works. Finding the Ben's Bell made an already happy day even happier. I know, too, that when I am having a bad day, the bell will cheer me up. It's a symbol of kindness, and that's why it is hanging in our home where it is very visible. We want everyone to see it when they visit.

When you find a bell, you are meant to take it home. There is even a tag on it telling you to do so, and to spread kindness. That is something this world could use more of, kindness.

We are lucky enough to have a studio in our area. So if you are interested in volunteering, you can reach out to them. They are located at 32 Stony Hill Road in Bethel, CT, and their phone number is 203-501-9999. For hours and more information, you can visit the Ben's Bells website.
